Jogjakarta - Day 4

Batik Tulis Griloyo
Today we are going to learn how to make batik (batik). We decided to go to this place called Batik Tulis Griloyo.

The drive there took half an hour but when we got there, we were greeted by a very friendly lady. She took us to this porch. In the porch, were several small stools, a little saucepan and a small stove. The lady then brought out several pieces of cloths and asked each of us to choose a design. There were several designs to chose from, fishes and flowers.

After we all chose our designs, she brought out candle wax and placed them into the saucepan. She then lit the fire in the stove. She explained that the wax will be used to draw over the designs on the batik cloth so that when the cloth was dyed, the parts covered by the wax will remain uncoloured and hence creating the batik pattern.

Lining the batik is so hard, the lady made it look so easy but we kept dripping the wax all over the cloth. I was so stressed I started to cry and the kind lady took me inside the house to rest. My family continued on making their batik outside.

After the cloths were drawn on, another lady took all the cloth and washed them in water dyed with leaves from coloured water. After several washes, the batik was hung on the line to dry.

Hurray, we did it! We should leave batik drawing to the experts.

Batik by the experts
We visited another batik place after our attempt to make batik, wow, this lady is so good. Her designs are so detail and fine.

Definitely leaving batik making to the experts.
